MAT 552: Introduction to Lie groups
and Lie algebras

Welcome to MAT 552!

This course will cover the basic theory of Lie groups and Lie algebras. You can find a tentative syllabus as well as the actual lecture material below. There will be regular homework assignments, a take-home midterm and a final exam; your grade will be based on all of the above.

• Place and time: TuTh 12:50pm - 2:10pm, Math P-131 (not Life Science 58 as was originally scheduled).

• Prerequisites: knowledge of linear algebra and group theory as covered by Algebra I, Algebra II core courses and basic differential geometry (manifolds, vector fields, etc).
• Textbooks: We will be using the following books as our primary textbooks. Both of them are placed on reserve in Math/Phys library; Fulton and Harris book is also available (and highly recommended) for purchase at University bookstore.
  • Representation theory: a first course, by W. Fulton and J. Harris (call number QA387.F85)
  • Lie groups and algebraic groups, by A. L. Onishchik, E. B. Vinberg (call number QA387.V5613)

  In addition, the following books may be used for some parts of the class:

  • Lie Groups, by J. Duistermaat, J. Kolk, Springer, 2000
  • Complex semisimple Lie algebras, by J.-P. Serre
  • Lie groups beyond an introduction, by A. Knapp, Birkhauser, 1996

• Lecture notes (taken by Gabriel Drummond-Cole). I am trying to turn this into a texbook; here is what I got at the moment.
