- Describe the the proof of Proposition I of Euclid’s Elements in your own words. Explain whether there is any gap in the proof, from a modern point of view. (Note: Here you have a nice version of Euclid’s elements, there are many online).
- Write down a very short biography of Diophantus, including when and where he lived and what is his relevance in the History of Mathematics.
- Section 5.3 Problems 1, 2, 8 and 12.
(Note: For reasons of time, we are not going to discuss Diophantus in class. The goal of problems 2 and 3 is to familiarize you with his life and mathematical work.)
